About Amy Seeley
WHO IS AMY SEELEY?
Amy Seeley is a creative artist that has taught thousands of other artists (from children to grown-ups) how to improvise and write comedy since 1996. She is a published playwright (Brooklyn Publishing/Heuer Publishing) an acclaimed actor and director, and a sought-after private comedy writing and Improv instructor.
WHERE IS AMY FROM?
Amy was born and raised in Moline, Illinois. She’s the daughter of a hairdresser and a drag racer. Seriously.
WHERE DID AMY TRAIN?
In 1988, Amy began training in the art of Improvisation at The Players Workshop studio in Chicago, the oldest Improv studio in the world. She continued her studies of Improv and sketch comedy writing at Chicago’s Second City conservatory followed by the study of long-form Improv at iO Chicago.
WHAT DID AMY SEELEY DO IN CHICAGO?
Amy is a proud founding member of Chicago’s acclaimed Factory Theater company, established in October of 1992. During her eight-year tenure with the Factory, including a season-long run as co-Artistic Director, she created, directed, and performed in several of the Factory’s most successful shows including: ABBA-rama, JAILBAIT, HOORAY!, BEAVERHUNT, and her critical and commercial hit solo show AMY SEELEY AND THE MOLINE MADMAN. In 1996, Amy began teaching Improv and sketch comedy writing at The Players Workshop. In 1998, Amy joined the faculty of Second City Chicago.
WHEN DID AMY MOVE TO LA?
In late 1999, Amy sold HOORAY! to MTV as an original pilot, which prompted her move to Los Angeles, California. While in development with MTV, she began teaching Improv and sketch comedy writing at the newly established Second City LA. In addition to directing dozens of Improv and original sketch comedy shows while serving as a core faculty member of SCLA, she hosted The Jam, a live weekly audience-participation evening of improv games for eight years. In 2009, Amy started teaching Improv and sketch comedy writing privately. She has served as a Guest Artist for the California State University Summer Arts program five times, where she taught improv and sketch writing in the extreme heat of Fresno, California, and the dense fog of Monterey Bay.
WHERE ARE AMY’S FORMER STUDENTS?
Amy is incredibly proud of her former students. Some of them have gone on to write and/or perform for SNL, Drunk History, HBO’s Funny Or Die, Amazon Prime originals, the Oscars telecast, national commercials, sitcoms, the Kelly Clarkson Show, The Today Show, anime film dubbing, and stand-up clubs around the world.
WHY DOES AMY’S VOICE SOUND FAMILIAR?!
Amy is the voice of Lt. Maya Ibuki in the anime double-feature Neon Genesis Evangelion. In August of 2021, she reprised her role for four new Evangelion movies on Amazon Prime. She also added her directing skills to the anime hits Read Or Die and Dead Leaves.
AND RIGHT NOW?
Amy lives in Los Angeles with her husband, Michael Ross. She enjoys cooking, baking, reading Romance novels, streaming all of the television shows, action movies, romantic movies, and helping artists find their true voice all while enjoying healthy snacks. And she’s always writing her next thing.
